What size cooker hood do I need?
Choosing the right size cooker hood matters.
The width of your hood directly affects how effectively it captures steam, grease and odours from cooking. As a rule, the hood should be at least the same width as your hob, and ideally slightly wider. This creates a larger “capture area” and means less steam escapes into your kitchen.
Recommended hood sizes
- 60 cm hobs → 60 cm or 70 cm hood
A 70 cm hood gives you more coverage, which is especially useful above gas hobs where steam and grease rise quickly. - 70 cm or 75 cm hobs → 80 cm or 90 cm hood
Where space allows, an 80 cm hood is the ideal match, offering perfect alignment with the hob edges. If you have more wall space, go up to 90 cm for maximum extraction. - 80 cm hobs → 80 cm or 90 cm hood
80 cm hoods are increasingly popular for wide induction hobs. A 90 cm option gives you additional coverage and is recommended if your kitchen layout allows. - 90 cm hobs or range cookers → 90 cm hood (minimum)
Wider hoods, such as 100–120 cm, are available for large range cookers. These give the best results in busy kitchens or where multiple pans are used at once. - Island hobs
Always match the hob width as a minimum. In open-plan spaces, a larger hood is usually better because there are no surrounding walls to help contain steam. For example, an 80 cm hob works best with a 90 cm island hood.
Mounting height
It’s not just about width – the distance between the hob and the hood matters too. Check your hood’s manual for exact figures, but these are common UK guidelines:
- Wall hoods: 75 cm above gas hobs, 55–65 cm above electric or induction hobs.
- Ceiling hoods: 75 to 160cm above the hob, depending on the model.
Tip
If you have the space, always go wider. For example, pairing a 70 cm hob with a 90 cm hood gives you more headroom and captures rising steam more effectively.

How to reduce hood noise
The bestselling Aria slimline ceiling hood has been updated to offer recirculation as well as standard ducted out. This is the only slimline recirculation small ceiling hood we know of that can be installed between joists in the existing ceiling line without the need to duct outside. Most recirculating hoods install below the ceiling line as they blow the cleaned air back into the kitchen from vents on the top of the hood. However, the Aria offers the ability to install flush to the ceiling line and duct back into the kitchen from a discrete ceiling vent. During installation, you use the flexible 220 x 90 ducting tube and round adaptor to connect the exhaust of the hood to the discrete white ceiling vent. The easy-to-replace charcoal filters are installed behind the grease filters on the hood. *The support beams on the diagram are a suggested installation method. You can use the clips to hang the hood on a baton across the joists. The diagram shows this configuration only works if the joists are running the same way as the hob. If you are installing across the joists, then no ceiling hood will fit flush to your ceiling. Please contact us if you are unsure if our non-ducted ceiling hood is suitable for your hob. Please refer to a tradesperson to double-check suitability for your installation. The product will fit between 8″ (203m) and higher joists plus 1 sheet of 12.5mm plasterboard 203mm +12.5mm = 215.5 mm > height of product 207mm. In case of tight installations, a further board or ply can be added to the ceiling ( imagine like a picture frame around the hood) and finished to match the ceiling giving you the room needed in the void between joists. Sometimes you may need to calibrate the remote control for first use or when replacing it. While in standby mode, long press the on/off button on the hood panel for 3 seconds till it flashes, then immediately press the on/off button on the remote control to complete • If the calibration was successful, an acoustic signal sounds. • If the calibration was not successful, the cooker hood switches to standby mode.

To replace the bulb, you will need a E14 SES Oven Bulb. The glass cover screws off, then the bulb is also a screw fitting. Replace the bulb, then retighten the cover.
Over time, your ViandPro Range Cooker door handle may become a touch looser if used heavily. It's a simple job to tighten up. Remove the inner glass panel and tighten a screw. It's a straightforward process, just follow the video for instructions.
